Why visit Funchal?

The dramatic volcanic scenery is one of a few reasons for the Portugese island of Madeira being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The capital , Funchal ,is breathtakingly perched on hills which slope down to the stormy Atlantic and with its array of coloured buildings looks like a living painting.

When should I visit?

April through to June is a superb time to visit Funchal; the island is covered in flowers (another reason Madeira has a UNESCO listing). In fact, shorly after Easter every year, Madeira hosts a flower festival to celebrate the local floral delights. This time period also brings cheaper hotel room rates and there are less tourists.

Must-sees?

Take a ferry from Funchal to Madeira's sister island Porto Santo with by far the most awesome beaches ever. Have a serene cable car journey from Funchal town centre to Monte for the most stunning views across the island .Then, get the adrenaline rushing through you as you are whisked down the hill on a basket, a local tradition. Learn the secrets of Nuns Valley at Curral das Freiras, a short distance away from Funchal. At the end of a busy sightseeing day, why not enjoy some Portugese dancing and singing over some food at Sabor a Fado in the Old Town?

Local traditions?

Every New Year Madeira takes on the world with the most extravagent New Year's Eve party. Cruise ships from many different countries converge in Funchal Harbour to join in the celebrations, live music resonates down the city's cobbled streets and towards Midnight The Madeira Orchestra New Year’s concert say goodbye to the past and welcomes in the new. Oh, and not forgetting a stunnning firework display which has been recorded as the largest display in the world. according to the Guinness Book of Records. The dazzling show is so important to Funchal that various types of firework are tested in displays over the summer months and other countries are invited to try out their offerings.
